The long-running legal battle between Ripple and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has entered a new phase of speculation, following a closed-door meeting held by the SEC on February 27, 2025. Fox Business journalist Eleanor Terrett cleared the rumors that have been spreading that the U.S. SEC might be considering dropping its appeal against Ripple. Will it or Will Not?

The speculation began after the SEC’s Crypto Task Force recently held a closed-door meeting with legal experts Jason Gottlieb, Andrew Hinkes, and J.W. Verret on 24 Feb 2025. They submitted a document discussing how the SEC regulates digital assets and highlighting key legal issues.

One of the key topics in the document was the Ripple lawsuit. The experts noted that the SEC called some cryptocurrencies securities without clear court approval. They also pointed out that judges have not fully agreed with the SEC’s stance on crypto transactions.

Specifically, the document mentioned Judge Analisa Torres’ ruling, which stated that XRP’s secondary sales those made by regular investors are not investment contracts. This goes against the SEC’s claims and weakens its argument in the case.

SEC Not Dropping the Case

After the SEC meeting, some members of the XRP community speculated that the agency was preparing to drop its appeal against Ripple. However, Eleanor Terrett quickly dismissed these claims.

When asked about it, she responded with a firm “no”, rejecting the idea that the SEC is considering backing down. She even added a facepalm emoji, showing her frustration with the misleading rumors.

Current Status of the Lawsuit

As of now, there is no official word that the SEC plans to drop its case against Ripple. Although the commission has withdrawn other crypto-related lawsuits, its fight against Ripple remains active.
