Vitalik Buterin criticizes Russia over Ukraine invasion

The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, has weighed in on the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. According to Buterin, the move was a “crime” against the people of both Ukraine and Russia.

Buterin’s remarks come in the wake of a “special military operation” announced by the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. However, this operation is now seen as a full-scale invasion in Ukraine.

Buterin criticizes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Buterin was born in Russia, but this has not deterred the 28-year old from criticizing the act made by his home country against Ukraine. According to the programmer, this move would lead to major consequences for the Ukrainian and Russian people.

“I know that there will be no security,” Buterin said, adding that he did not see any possibility of the conflict being resolved diplomatically. By making these remarks, Buterin is going against the stand of its motherland, Russia. He even ended his tweet with the phrase, “Glory to Ukraine.”

However, Buterin has stressed that his personal opinion is not that of Ethereum, saying, “Ethereum is neutral, but I am not.”

The growing tensions between Russia and Ukraine have resulted in a major disruption of the crypto sector and the global financial market. On Thursday, Bitcoin fell below $35,000, making it the lowest level since June 2021. Most of the other cryptocurrencies are also trading in the red zone.

The cryptocurrency market capitalization dipped to below $1.6 trillion following this dip, showing that around $200 billion has been liquidated since then.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has heightened tensions globally, and the West has responded with harsh sanctions against Russia. The US President, Joe Biden, has said the attacks are “unprovoked and unjustified.”

The Prime Minister of the UK has also imposed sanctions on Russia, and so has the European Commission. The sanctions are already taking a toll on the Russian financial sector. The Russian ruble is trading at an all-time low against the US dollar. The Russian stock market is also trading at considerably low prices.
