President Nayib Bukele announces that 44 countries will meet in El Salvador to discuss Bitcoin

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele announced a meeting of 32 central banks and 12 financial authorities from 44 countries on Twitter late Sunday night. On Monday, May 16, this meeting will take place to discuss financial inclusion, the digital economy, banking the unbanked, and El Salvador’s Bitcoin (BTC) rollout and benefits.

President Bukele tweeted on Sunday evening, “Tomorrow, 32 central banks and 12 financial authorities (44 nations) will gather in El Salvador to discuss financial inclusion, digital economy, banking the unbanked, the bitcoin rollout and its advantages in our country.”

On Monday, officials from Africa, Asia, and Latin America will meet in Guatemala, with financial inclusion and the digital economy among the subjects of discussion.

El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, posted a complete list of guests on Twitter, announcing that the central banks of Egypt and Nigeria, Africa’s two largest economies, will be in attendance.

El Salvador chose bitcoin to combat hyperinflation and reduce its dependency on the US currency.

In follow up tweets, the president listed the financial authorities that will be meeting in El Salvador, which include:

  • Central Bank of Paraguay
  • National Bank of Angola
  • Bank of Ghana
  • Bank of Namibia
  • Bank of Uganda
  • Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea
  • Central Bank of Madagascar
  • Bank of the Republic of Haiti
  • Bank of the Republic of Burundi
  • Central Bank of Eswatini and its Ministry of Finance
  • Central Bank of Jordan
  • Central Bank of The Gambia
  • National Committee of Banks and Seguros of Honduras
  • Directorate General of Treasury

This announcement comes shortly after El Salvador bought 500 BTC worth $15.5 million at the time. The country has shown great interest in the cryptocurrency, even going as far as to lay out plans for a Bitcoin City.
