Minecraft Updates User Policies, Bans NFT Integrations On Its Platform

Minecraft, a sandbox video game developed by Mojang Studios, has successfully updated its user policies to offer more guidance on the rapidly evolving non-fungible token (NFT) technologies that have lately taken the video gaming industry by storm.

In a July 20 press release, Minecraft confirmed updating its user policies to offer more precise guidance on the new blockchain technologies. The rapid response appears after some feedback from community members about its position on NFTs.

Minecraft has clarified that it won’t allow integration with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) or blockchain. The gaming platform cited that NFT is a digital asset part of blockchain often purchased with crypto like Bitcoin (BTC).

Minecraft noted that although NFTs are digital artworks providing a state of ownership to digital art, they are associated with speculation, where influencers pump and dump prices to generate returns.

Minecraft’s User Policy On NFTs

Minecraft has updated its user policies to allow all players access to the same functionality, arguing that it remains a community where everyone has access to the same contents. Minecraft argued that NFT integrations create models of scarcity and exclusion, which may conflict with its guidelines and spirit.

The newly updated policies prohibit Minecraft players from integrating blockchain technology inside its server applications and in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods.

Minecraft noted that some companies had launched NFT implementations relating to world files and skin packs, such as Minecraft collectible NFTs. According to Minecraft, all these NFT integrations create digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with its value of creative inclusion.

Moreover, Minecraft maintained that the speculative pricing and investment around NFTs takes away the focus of gamers playing games to profiteering, creating inconsistent long-term joy and success for users.

Minecraft raised concern that many third-party NFTs may not be reliable, and players who buy them could incur heavy losses. Nonetheless, Minecraft recognized the intrinsic value of a trading platform where values are recognized.

In the meantime, Minecraft has prohibited players from integrating blockchain technologies inside its serve applications to create NFTs assets associated with in-game content, including worlds, skins, and personal items.
