The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, has thanked the cryptocurrency community for a Shiba Inu donation made last year. The donation has gone towards funding for an AI research grant.

Vitalik Buterin funds AI research grant

The Shiba Inu developer team made a massive donation of SHIB tokens to the co-founder of Ethereum. After receiving the donation, Buterin burned some of the tokens. However, he also retailed some with plans to donate them towards a worthy charity course.

In one of the burning transactions on-chain, Buterin said that he had burned 90% of the SHIB tokens in his wallet. He added that 10% would be sent towards a charity course that he had not yet decided. However, the charity course needed to have a similar value as CryptoRelief, preventing large-scale loss of life. However, it does this while preventing long-term orientation.

One of the initiatives he has supported with part of the SHIB tokens he received is the “Vitalik Buterin Ph.D. Fellowship in AI Existential Safety.” This is an organization that targets students beginning their Ph.D. programs this year and working in research on AI existential safety.

The program will also include the existing Ph.D. students that would not receive any funding to explore the same area. Students in Cana, the US, and the UK will receive funding that covers the tuition fees and a stipend of up to $40,000 for the Ph.D. program. The students will also receive funding worth $10,000 that will be used for research expenses like traveling and computing.

The first batch of students that will benefit from the funding has already been selected. This batch was announced on Wednesday. In the announcement about this cohort of students, the students said that the objective was working toward ensuring that AI would be used for the benefit of humanity and would not destroy it.

Vitalik thanks the SHIB community

The SHIB development team donated these tokens to Vitalik last year, and after Buterin burned most of the tokens, the SHIB supply was significantly reduced. Shiba Inu is still one of the cheapest tokens in the market, but its vast community has seen it bag a large market cap.

Buterin thanked the SHIB community for the donation, saying that without their help, the support that went towards the students would have been impossible.
