Sam Bankman-Fried’s parents, Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried are reportedly trying to secure a presidential pardon for their son. However, it’s still unclear whether they have directly reached out to Trump or his administration. Their efforts come at a time when crypto-related pardons are making headlines, especially after Trump granted clemency to Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht.

as well.

Challenges in Securing a Pardon

Unlike Ulbricht, who had a strong community advocating for his release, SBF faces significant challenges. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for defrauding investors out of billions through FTX, one of the biggest financial frauds in U.S. history. His close ties to the Democratic Party, including a $5.2 million donation to Biden’s 2020 campaign, could also work against him under a Trump administration.

However, SBF’s family and friends sent many letters to the judge during his trial to reduce his imprisonment; they painted a positive picture of him by calling him a compassionate genius business tycoon who failed due to his ‘neurodiverse’ traits. All these factors and Elon Musk’s support may prove beneficial for him.

Odds Are Stacked Against Him

Despite the discussions, betting markets remain doubtful about SBF’s chances. Polymarket currently gives him only a 6% chance of receiving a pardon, compared to Ulbricht’s 95% before his release. With Trump likely facing pressure to be selective in his pardons, it remains uncertain whether SBF will receive the same leniency. However, the crypto world is watching closely to see how this unfolds.
